We’re less than a week old in training camp and there’s already trouble in Raven land. If head coach John Harbaugh isn’t bald-headed by now, I’m sure he has a death grip by the roots of his hair.
The Ravens is in camp without their franchise QB Joe Flaccowho is nursing a back injury and he might be able to return to practice and might be able to take snaps on opening day. Flacco, who is the midst of a 3 year, $66 million-dollar extension may lead the charge with some missing key players:
- CB Tavon Young (torn ACL)
- TE Dennis Pitta (fractured hip – possibly retirement)
- RB Kenneth Dixon (torn MCL)
- OL Crockett Gilmore (torn MCL)
- CB Maurice Canady (knee)
AND you throw in the unexpected announcing retirement of 26 year old OL John Urschel, the Ravens are probably wondering where do they begin. It’s safe to assume that Ryan Mallett is the no. 2 backup (starter if Flacco isn’t ready by opening day) and the Ravens, just like every other franchise want a good quality backup QB. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti exercised the thought of signing unemployed QB Colin Kaepernick but after he sought advice from the fans of Raven Nation, that idea was shot down.
When you look at the landscape of the AFC North division, it’s been a two team race between the Ravens and the 6-time Super Bowl champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals have won a few divisions in recent past but just can’t get past the first round of the playoffs. Let’s not forget that epic showdown on Christmas night where WR Antonio Brown saved the day and score the game winning TD to give the Steelers the inside track to winning the division.
It appears that the Ravens will open the season with a tough road to follow and I’m sure GM Ozzie Newsome is praying for a quick and healthy Flacco to return. The Ravens draft picks:
1. (16) Marlon Humphrey-CB; Alabama
2. (47) Tyus Bowers-OLB; Houston
3. (74) Chris Wormley-DL; Michigan
3. (78) Tim Williams-OLB; Alabama
4. (122) Nico Sirgusa-G; San Diego State
5. (159) Jermaine Eluemunor-G; Texas A&M
6. (186) Chuck Clark-S; Virginia Tech
All eyes will be on their top draft pick Humphrey from Alabama. The defense has dropped off since the Ravens ambassador Ray Lewis retired. How much does T-Sizzle have left in the tank? Mike Wallace, their top receiver got some help from FA Jeremy Maclin but he’s in the same category with Suggs…… Can he stay healthy? It’s all hands on deck for Raven Nation and if they drop to third place in the division by late October, they better start making plans on who to draft in the 2018 BFL Draft…..
